OPENVMS CLUSTER ACHIEVES 10 YEARS UPTIME

At WVNET there is a OpenVMS cluster has been up since 5-JAN-1996 that is over 10 years .

WVNET is the West Virginia Network, a dynamic service organization providing telecommunications and computing services within West Virginia. WVNET was created in 1975 to provide central computing facilities and wide-area network communications linking its "central site" computing resources in Morgantown with the campus computing systems at most of the colleges and universities throughout the state.

The cluster consists of - Alpha 4100 (with four 533Mhz CPUs) running VMS 7.3-2 - VAX 6000-630 running VMS 7.3 - four DEC 3000 workstations running VMS 7.3-2

The cluster provices a variety of services: - Runs the Banner student information system (on Oracle) for one of the member institutions of higher education. - Runs multiple Oracle/Banner test databases to support Banner running on VMS at some of other member institutions. - Is the Usenet news server (running DNEWS). - Is one of the Domain Name (DNS) servers for several hundred domains. - Provides DHCP, Bootp, Kerberos and print services - Hosts the VMS Mosaic web site and ftp server.

As the cluster is running VMS V7.3-2 there must have been a series of rolling upgrades over the last 10 years. Its a very impressive system management achievement.

OPENVMS IN THE NEWS

Positive mention for OpenVMS on Slashdot "Thankfully our management felt that our zero downtime in 5 years with PMDF and OpenVMS in general was worth something and we got to watch as the rest of the Bank have been plagued with viruses, crashes, and the best, only 2 people on a team may access the workflow system at a time. " http://ask.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=172574&cid=14368426

Business Continuity for Small Businesses by Drew Robb "On September 11th, for example, several financial services firms situated in and around the World Trade Center didn't lose a single transaction. Why? Many had expensive servers running the OpenVMS operating system with identical gear available at a remote data center." http://www.enterprisestorageforum.com/continuity/features/article.php/3574416

Midrange Unix Servers: HP and Sun Need to Catch IBM by Timothy Prickett Morgan "The HP Integrity machines also run OpenVMS and the NonStop kernel, too." http://www.itjungle.com/tug/tug120805-story01.html

ALTERNATIVE VMS

VMS, as you probably realize, has other meanings e.g. - Volcanogenic Massive Sulfide - Variable Message Sign - Virtual Monitoring System

and so on. I particularly like this one - the Voluntary Milking System (VMS) which apparently gives cows the power to decide when they want to be milked.

For more fascinating detail see

(unfourtunally this VMS runs on liunx)

CURL 7.15.1 RELEASED FOR OPENVMS

The latest version of cURL, 7.15.1, has been released for OpenVMS and is available for download.

http://curl.haxx.se/download.html#VMS

This is the binary and object library distribution of the cURL 7.15.1 release. See the readme.vms file in the zip for usage information. The zip files contain executables and objects built with OpenSSL, hpSSL and without SSL support. The files are in architecture specific zips.

The OpenSSL and noSSL versions are self-contained in that you can run these programs without any other software on the system. For the hp SSL version, you will need to have hp's SSL V1.1-B product installed. This version doesn't support hp's SSL on IA64, since the machine the kit was compiled on doesn't have it.

Curl is a command line tool for transferring files with URL syntax, supporting FTP, FTPS, HTTP, HTTPS, GOPHER, TELNET, DICT, FILE and LDAP. Curl supports HTTPS certificates, HTTP POST, HTTP PUT, FTP uploading, kerberos, HTTP form based upload, proxies, cookies, user+password authentication, file transfer resume, http proxy tunneling and other useful things.
